The story behind Sentinels

In Ezekiel 33, God puts a watchman on the city wall. His job is simple and serious: see what's coming and sound the alarm, so the people can come home safe.

Sentinels is my story. I grew up loving Jesus, with a Bible in my hands and a fire in my chest, but my soul had no rest. A thousand churches, a thousand claims, and none of them teaching the same thing. Then I found the Church Christ built on Peter, the Church that still believes what Jesus said in John 6, the same faith the first Christians died for.

Now I'm on the wall with a trumpet in hand. Not to shame anybody, but to show them the Lamb. Every Catholic is called to this. We're the watchmen. We're the sentinels. And the message is the same as it's always been: it's time to come home.

Scripture & teaching

  • Ezekiel 33:7: God appoints a watchman for His people.
  • Matthew 16:18–19: "On this rock I will build my Church," and the keys given to Peter.
  • John 6:53–66: "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man…" Some walked away. He didn't change His words.
  • Ephesians 4:5: One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
  • Psalm 34:8 and John 8:32: Taste and see. The truth will set you free.
  • St. Ignatius of Antioch (c. 107 AD) called the Eucharist the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 7).
  • St. Justin Martyr (c. 155 AD) described the Sunday Eucharist and taught it is the flesh and blood of Jesus (First Apology 66).
  • St. Irenaeus (c. 180 AD) pointed to the Church of Rome, founded on Peter and Paul, as the standard of the apostolic faith (Against Heresies 3.3.2).

Lyrics

IntroYou, son of man—I have appointed you as a sentinel for the house of Israel; when you hear a word from my mouth, you must warn them for me.
Ezekiel 33:7

HookWe're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.
We're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.
We're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.
We're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.

Verse 1I was raised with a Bible and a fire in my chest
Loved Jesus Christ, but my soul had unrest
A thousand little churches, each one had a claim
All said "Scripture," but they didn't teach the same
Then I heard Christ say, "On this rock I build"
Keys to the Kingdom, heaven's promise sealed
Peter got the keys, not a thought, not a vibe
A Church with a Shepherd, still alive
Then John six hit me like thunder in the room
"Eat My flesh," said the Lord before the tomb
Some walked away, but He did not change
He let them leave, but His words stayed the same
So I stand on the wall with a trumpet in hand
Not to shame lost sheep, but to show them the Lamb
Grace is not dead, mercy still calls
Christ has one Church, sentinels on the wall

HookWe're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.
We're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.
We're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.
We're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
Sound the alarm—it's time to come home.

Verse 2St. Ignatius wrote what the first Church knew
Christ's words were real, forever true
He called the Eucharist the flesh of the Lord
Just like Jesus said before
St. Justin Martyr preached what Christians received
Heaven's gift for those who believe
St. Irenaeus pointed to the Church of Rome
One holy faith still calling us home
One Lord, one faith, one baptism still
One Shepherd leading by His will
The gates of hell will never win
Christ keeps His Church through every wind
Watchmen cry, "Come taste and see."
Truth will always set you free.
Christ is calling, hear His voice.
Come back home—now make your choice.

Final hookWe're the watchmen, we're the sentinels.
